Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan have finally recorded together. The remix of "expectations," from Rodrigo's third album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, arrived on streaming services on Thursday, October 15, along with a music video starring both singers.

The new version was produced by Dan Nigro, a longtime collaborator of both artists, and the video was directed by Bardia Zeinali, whose credits include Sabrina Carpenter, KATSEYE and Tate McRae. According to Clash, it is Chappell Roan's first-ever feature on another artist's song.

Beyond streaming, the single is available as limited-edition 7-inch vinyl, CD and cassette through both artists' official online stores.

A team-up years in the making

Rodrigo and Roan have been friends since 2020, when the producer they shared introduced them. Roan opened shows for Rodrigo before becoming one of pop's biggest breakout stars, and both have spoken often about their mutual admiration. In past interviews, Rodrigo said Roan taught her "so much about artistry and being creative" and gives her advice on taking care of herself. Speaking with Apple Music's Zane Lowe, the pair discussed how the remix came together, including the dating stories behind Roan's verse.

"expectations" is an '80s new wave-flavored dance track about holding partners to impossibly high standards. The original appears on the album, which SPIN describes as a global No. 1.

What comes next

Rodrigo is in the middle of The Unraveled Tour, which has sold more than one million tickets worldwide, according to SPIN. Roan hosts a two-night benefit event in Los Angeles on October 21 and 22, with net proceeds going to the Midwest Princess Project, the nonprofit she launched to support trans youth and LGBTQ+ communities. Neither artist has announced a live performance of the remix so far.
