Steven Soderbergh will finish shooting The Batman Part II as Matt Reeves says he is not leaving
DC Studios confirmed the director steps in for the final weeks of principal photography while Reeves attends to a family matter.
Steven Soderbergh, the director behind Traffic and Ocean's Eleven, will oversee the final weeks of filming on The Batman Part II. DC Studios confirmed the move on Thursday, October 15: writer-director Matt Reeves remains away attending to a family matter, and Soderbergh offered to help complete principal photography.
According to the studio's statement, reported by Variety, Soderbergh joins "with the full support of DC Studios" and will work with Reeves, the cast and the crew to complete the director's vision. Reeves will take over post-production when he is able to return.
Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II. I am profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time.
Soderbergh praised the first film as "intentional, specific and rigorously coherent" and said the goal is to shoot footage that fits seamlessly with what has already been filmed.
How we got here
The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, opened in 2022, and the sequel was pushed back several times. Cameras finally rolled in London this year, and production paused in early October when DC Studios said Reeves needed to focus on a family matter, without giving details. The studio has not said how much shooting remains beyond "the final weeks."
What about the release date?
For now, the film is still dated for February 2028. DC Studios has not announced any change, though trade reports note it is too early to know whether the pause will affect the schedule. We will update this story if the date moves.
It is unusual for a filmmaker of Soderbergh's standing to step into someone else's movie without taking credit. Based on what the studio and both directors have said, his role is a temporary one: Reeves remains the director of The Batman Part II.
