Home studio with a keyboard, studio monitors and a computer

FL Studio is one of the most used programs for producing funk and electronic music. It looks intimidating at first, but a simple beat only uses three windows.

  1. Set the tempo

At the top, adjust the tempo. Funk usually sits around 130 beats per minute.

  2. Build the channel rack

In the Channel Rack, load a kick, a snare or clap, a hi-hat and an 808 for the bass.

  3. Program the steps

Each channel has sixteen small squares, which make up a bar. Click to light up the hits. Start with the kick, then the snare.

  4. Bring the hi-hat to life

Vary the velocity of some notes. A hi-hat that is always the same sounds mechanical.

  5. Move it to the Playlist

Drag the pattern into the Playlist and repeat it. Create variations for the intro, middle and ending.

The bass is the heart

In funk, the 808 carries the song. Open the Piano Roll for the 808 channel and write long notes that follow the kick. Adjust the volume until it fills the mix without distorting.
